Some things make a post, right?

1. I had the dentist today, so I took the day off, because I am always so exhausted when I come back from the dentist. It's rarely bad, but trying to breathe through the cleaning is always an adventure I do not enjoy and it makes me tired. But I told them that the crown I got in December is mostly fine except if I try to eat almonds or other hard things, so the dentist did something to it "fix the bite." He also said it didn't look like anything was wrong either in the examination or on the x-ray, and to let him know if it didn't get better (or even got worse), so I guess we'll see.

1a. I arrived about 30 minutes early for my appointment - it usually takes much longer to get there so I allowed an hour - but they took me in right away since I was only scheduled to be there for a cleaning, and I was home before noon.

B. I was excited to see ZIBANEJAD score the tying goal for Sweden, but then Quinn Hughes won it for the US in overtime. I have to admit, I don't like 3-on-3 overtime (or shootouts!) for the Olympics. Just play another sudden death period.

iii. This past weekend, Baby Miss L went to her first princess tea party event at the Riverhead aquarium (or near there?) and the pictures of her holding court among the princesses are amazing, but my favorite picture is the one of her making a very excited "oh wow!" face at the plate of desserts in front of her. She was ready to dig in!

d. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band are coming to MSG in May!!! Tickets go on sale this weekend! I will probably not try to get them, even though MSG is pretty much the 2nd most convenient venue he could play. (Forest Hills Stadium would be the most convenient for me, but would never happen.)

5. I've reached The Butcher's Masquerade in my DCC reread, and I think it might be my favorite of the books? It has a couple of my favorite scenes in it, anyway, including spoilers ) I definitely prefer the more open-world type floors than the stuff like the Iron Tangle (and I did find the cards so fucking tedious in book 6; otoh, spoilers )).

Though This Inevitable Ruin is also a strong contender, since I fucking love spoilers ) There's a lot in it that I enjoyed and that also makes me so curious about what happens next, both in the dungeon and outside of it. I am definitely writing up an epic post based on notes I'm taking on rereading, which will eventually get posted. I hope. *g*

1) Apparently I never mentioned here that my partner and I went to see The Harlem Globetrotters last month. He said he'd always wanted to see them. It turned out to be different from what we expected. Read more... )

2) I also tend to work on a lot of jigsaw puzzles in December and January. It's nice to sit by the sunny window and watch TV in the background while working on them. I've now put away the jigsaw board and sold off the puzzles, but Ahsoka and Grogu were a favorite Read more... )

3) I was listening to the Mutant Enemy Writer's Room Reunion recorded on March 17, 2015. Over 10 years ago now, but at the time it was already a decade on from the ending of all the Mutant Enemy shows. It was a really interesting listen, in terms of how those shows were written vs. the writers' experiences on other shows (especially broadcast network shows). But it also amazed me how, while rewrites were apparently rare, it was also not at all unusual that scripts were unfinished even as episodes were being filmed. Read more... )

4) In recent months I've been listening to a radio show from the 50s and 60s that does a variety of non-rock/pop tunes, as opposed to stuff like mambos, sambas, novelty songs, and other stuff that doesn't tend to make oldies' playlists. Sometimes they have TV theme songs in there too. Not sure I'd heard the Route 66 theme before, but the version I was listening to sounded like The Simpsons theme in that the main repeated phrase was similar. Made me eyebrow raise a little since it's one of the most profitable show themes ever written.

5) The recent Fansplaining article The Success of Heated Rivalry Should Not Be a Surprise contains other surprises. For one, the author is bewildered by most articles on the show covering (for the 1 millionth time) the "women interested in gay sex" aspect, and then also why there are so many more connections to Asian BL fandoms rather than more close-to-home slash fandoms including RPF fandoms. Final results on the weekend checklist!

- Finish [community profile] purimgifts fics. They're all done, I just need to pick titles and give them one final edit before I post (if I was really crunched for time, they'd be fine to go up now, but I've got a week left for polishing).
- At least 200 words on Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned Hoping for a little more this week, but it went somewhere!
- At least 200 words on any kink meme fill or WIP that isn't one of those, picked by whatever I feel like writing at the time
- At least three [community profile] fandomweekly banners
- Finish the dishes from last night (this is a Friday project) And even more dishes!
- Bake scones before the green onions go bad So I didn't actually make the scones, but I did make a plate of roasted vegetables that would make a Redwall mouse jealous, so I think that counts in principle. I'll make the scones tomorrow night.

Overall, 4/6 isn't bad! And I got laundry done and took lots of walks and read a book. I would have liked to get a few more things written, but oh well, it was a pretty good weekend overall.

I lost most of yesterday to feeling unwell and spending a good part of the day in bed, but I did make char siu and therefore did make pork buns today and as always, they are so good! And remarkably easy, too, if you follow the recipe. I still have tomorrow for doughnuts, potentially.

I also spent some time yesterday watching more Pluribus and I find myself arguing with myself about it. spoilers )

So I still am not sure how much I like it as a show, but I am definitely curious to see where it goes (no spoilers past "HDP" please!).

Sweetiecat is starting to do better. Her tail isn't dragging, she lifts her head to look at me and she's purring a little. Last night she jumped up on the bed next to Steve, which she hasn't done in a while. She is eating and visiting the litter box, and moving around.

Zoomy is a bit of a sad sack, because he feels left out; Sweetie is getting all the attention, he thinks. I have the door open, and he could come in at any time and curl up next to me, but he is not doing it; he's fussing about Sweetie. She's his big tolerant sister who puts up with him jumping on her until she does a judo move and stand over him and lets him know that's enough. He is a dear loving boy, and getting bigger every day, or longer.

And I have decided, after much upset and a cost-benefit calculation, not to go to Sacred Space, the big interreligious pagan conference that is less than 15 miles from me this time. more behind cut )

Updated weekend checklist, just to see if it prods me to do more things:

- Finish [community profile] purimgifts fics. I have half a fic and an edit left to go. Not as much as I wanted, but close!
- At least 200 words on Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned I picked Forsaken Road this time, but once I get the exchange stuff done I'll probably do some more.
- At least 200 words on any kink meme fill or WIP that isn't one of those, picked by whatever I feel like writing at the time
- At least three [community profile] fandomweekly banners
- Finish the dishes from last night (this is a Friday project) (Of course, there are more dishes now. Alas. Such is life.)
- Bake scones before the green onions go bad

Not quite as productive as I wanted, but I prioritized getting a little more sleep and taking a nice walk over writing. We'll see how long that lasts, but it felt nice.

Apparently, after I stopped watching 'Primeval' because they'd killed off or lost all the original players, they brought it back for two more seasons, in the process finding two characters lost in the Cretacious Era. So now I'm watching entirely new-to-me episodes, and thinking how much more AU my AU series of stories is now with all this additional context.

Friday + weekend checklist of Stuff To Work On:

- Finish [community profile] purimgifts fics. Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, so ideally those will be complete and posted by midday Saturday.
- At least 200 words on Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned (I've had a decent run at both of those and would like to continue it)
- At least 200 words on any kink meme fill or WIP that isn't one of those, picked by whatever I feel like writing at the time
- At least three [community profile] fandomweekly banners
- Finish the dishes from last night (this is a Friday project)
- Bake scones before the green onions go bad

Wish me luck. It's not a long list, and it's supposed to be beautiful weather, so ideally I will not spend my weekend huddled under the blankets.

Sweetie is home from the vet, with medicine to rub on her ear (for absorption) and pills (good luck to us on that) and a shot from the vet to help things move through her better. They took blood tests also but we'll find out about them Monday.

She is sniffing at food, and walking around outside of her hiding place, so I think she's feeling a little better. Steve said she purred for them, which is very good.

I am very tired. I took tomorrow off and we're closed on Monday, so I have a 4-day weekend and I am looking forward to not having to deal with several varieties of annoying co-worker (e.g., one who expects me to show up and take minutes at a meeting I was never even invited to [it's tomorrow, though, so my boss informed them I would be on vacation and someone else would have to do it]; one who insists I fill out paperwork I have already filled out and submitted - they went silent when I emailed the signed form back with the email from the day I sent it and then the invoice got paid so I guess I can't complain too much; one who feels the need to do everything by phone when email would suffice, etc.).

I've got some fun cooking plans - hopefully I get some sausage tomorrow and can make that pasta dish, but I have also been struck with the idea of making calzones, so I might do that (on Monday if not tomorrow, maybe). I took some pork ribs out of the freezer and plan to do char siu on Saturday and char siu bao on Sunday, and I might also take a crack at making some doughnuts. Depends on how much I feel like deep frying I guess. Maybe I'll make cranberry curd and fill them with that. Who can say? It might just end up being raspberry jam or pastry cream. All of it sounds good to me.

updates of a sort

Sweetie has a vet appointment tomorrow. I think she's constipated; she is peeing (including on the back room rug, which I sprayed peroxide on after mopping it up), but not passing anything. She is not eating, though I think from the pee volume she is drinking water. And she is still mainly hiding behind stuff under the ancient (possibly post-colonial era fourth-hand) desk with the enormous 92-year-old sort-of-easy-chair that is hard to move). Since she is able to get up and walk well enough, I will slide down the front of the chair under the desk tomorrow and try to move her, which will make her get up and walk out, where Steve can grab her.

My throat is okay now. Maybe something is going around? A one-day sore throat that vanishes?

Sweetie, our 14-lb Kliban cat (dark gray and black tabby) hasn't been feeling well. She was upchucking yesterday, not furballs, and I think she may be allergic to the food. But this morning we couldn't find her at all -- looked downstairs and main floor -- until the SU located her in the most inaccessible place in the house: on the old shag rug under the desk in the library/not so spare room. There, she's under a large desk and blocked in by a large chair and neither of us are up to digging her out. She is reasonably alert, so we're waiting for her to emerge at some point. I've put out water for her, and food that I know she can eat (non fish). And now we wait.

Meanwhile, there's a gland at the top of my throat that is trying to decide if it's swollen or not.

We had lovely warm (unseasonable) weather yesterday, and now it's back down to freezing temperatures again. :( I know it's supposed to be cold here this time of year, but that brief glimpse of spring was so nice. I am not built for winters. Bring back the nice warm weather and the birds and the green!

At least the sun is shining, and we're out of the darkest weeks of the year. My goal for tonight is to do the dishes, and cook something. Could be scones, could be chicken, whatever. I've got both. But something needs to go in my oven.

1) It's surprising to me that it's been a month since I last posted...here. I have been posting every week in communities, but simply haven't completed some write ups and reviews I wanted to make.

However speaking of communities, [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge will be starting up again on March 1. If you've written meta, join in and copy your meta over to an additional location for both discovery and safekeeping! More details at the community link.

2) We were watching Colbert and his wife Evie was on. For Valentine's Day they read through her 12 year old writings about what she considered the perfect guy for her. Among her notes was that he should be "all man." This made my partner remember an event in hockey where a player was placed in the penalty box because his team had too many players on the ice. The TV caption however, as they showed him sitting there was "Too much man." I found this hilarious.

3) I daresay the article Stop Meeting Students Where They Are is relevant to various readers here. They key to me is that (a) younger online users are starting to intentionally reduce their time there, and Read more... )

4) Love how the same people scolding audiences for preferring to watch movies at home, don't go to the cinema even when it's free. "The Academy has long hosted screenings of Oscar-hopefuls for its members throughout the year in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York and London, and then again after the announcement of the Oscar nominations.

But in recent years β€” particularly over the seven years since the Academy introduced its members-only streaming service, the Academy Screening Room, through which members can watch films at home β€” attendance at all of these screenings has markedly declined.... β€œan average of five members attended these screenings in the last two years,” ...which reportedly cost the organization thousands of dollars a pop. So the Academy decided to save resources by eliminating them altogether." Aside from the Academy members can view movies on the big screen at the many showings hosted by the nominating studios. They just choose not to, just like most other viewers.

5) We finished watching Bodkin, which I will agree was an interesting view, though I had trouble getting into it, primarily because I was not fond of any of the main characters. A few episodes in the mystery was developing and I was fairly satisfied with how that unfolded and its complexity.

My big problem was that Netflix had labeled this "Comedy." Read more... )

Today's non-work to-do list:

- crosspost at least a couple kink meme fills to DW
- work on [community profile] purimgifts fics
- at least 200 more words on either Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned
- at least 100 words on any kink meme fill or Fandomweekly prompt of my choice
- cook some actual dinner. There's chicken in the fridge and I need to do something with it.

The local coffee shop is running a really good sale, so I can get myself a treat if I stay on top of all of my work stuff (so far, so good, but it's going to be a long day). Dark chocolate mocha and a nice sandwich, maybe.
